Invasive Plants

Two invasive plants that are posing a serious threat to local plants in the area are the garlic mustard and buckthorn. The garlic mustard plant has a hardy green stalk and small cluster of white blossoms and the buckthorn is an ornamental bush popular for its berries and flowers. While garlic mustard has just started to creep into forests and lawns in the area, buckthorn is rampant in many of the area’s forests, where it already is shading out saplings. It can reach 20 feet to 25 feet in height and 10 inches in diameter.
